Moped car brake drum

The brake drum is the part against which the brake shoes rub to slow down and stop the moped car. The drum is attached to the wheel hub and rotates with the wheel. When the brake is applied, the brake shoes are pushed outwards by the wheel cylinder against the inside of the drum. A good brake drum together with the brake shoes determines safe and reliable braking performance. Typical symptoms of a worn or damaged brake drum are vibrations when braking because the drum is no longer round, grinding, squealing or metallic sounds when braking, a longer braking distance despite new or good brake shoes, visible grooves, scratches or hot spots on the inside of the drum, a drum worn below the minimum thickness, and cracks or fractures from overheating. Always replace brake drums for the left and right wheel at the same time for equal braking force on both sides. When replacing the brake drum, always also replace the brake shoes, as old shoes have bedded in on the old drum. Check the wheel cylinder for leaks when replacing.

Brake drums are sold individually and are identical for the left and right wheel. They are often brand-specific.
